Japie Goosen a self-taught artist was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. Growing up among creative and talented artists in the family he was soon encouraged to work as an airbrush portrait artist when he left school, but discovering that he was partially color blind he moved on to the simple black and white minimalist effect that only charcoal can bring. His love for sketching has grown over the years and he now specializes in drawing, mostly portraiture. He also finds great pleasure in drawing pets, animals and wildlife.
Charcoal renders not only harsh, sharp lines but also soft subtle shades and quickly brings a subject to life. It is his belief that given the right environment and encouragement, we all possess an innate ability to create. He hopes that his work will inspire others, to at least once in their lifetime, try their hand at art, and what better medium to do it in than charcoal. . . its quick, its cheap, its only a BBQ away !!
